Get to Know Washington

Washington Middle School students are passionate about their school and about life in general, take a look and see what's going on at WMS...

Ofrenda

All of the children from La Washa’s gifted program participated in the creation of an ofrenda,(offering, or altar,) that will be displayed for Day of the Dead at South Broadway Cultural Center through November 4th.  For this project, the children hand-made shrines to honor their passed loved ones, as well as other traditional elements that belong on an ofrenda, such as papel picado, (cut paper art,) and Calaveras, (skulls.) Additionally, Ms. MacKenzie brought in Albuquerque’s most established artist, Sean Wells, to make retablos, (a traditional Spanish Colonial art form of painting images on boards,) with the children that will also go into the ofrenda. Some of the more traditional Spanish Colonial style retablos that the kids made will then go on to another show at the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art later this year. Hence, those children will have their pieces displayed at two of New Mexico’s finest museums.

Raiders in the News!

Washington Middle School's campus continues to be beautified and improved! Not only did our beautiful mural "Resilience" get completed alongside our community partners Working Classroom, an additional partnership with USTA and New Mexico Youth Tennis Association has brought to our campus four new beautiful youth practice tennis courts. Our tennis team no longer has to go off campus to practice and we can incorporate tennis into our Physical Education programs therefore exposing more and more students to the wonderful game of tennis. Thank you to our tennis Coach Becky Lee, Judge Ed Benavidez, Commissioner Maggie Hart, Fred Montano and John Dufay of M & O as well as all of our additional sponsors who made this happen for WMS. Thank you!
