Letter from our Principal

Students, Parents and Community Members:

Welcome back to school! It is hard to believe the 2016-2017 school year is already here. As we begin the new school year, you will see how our neighborhood and our community business partners are supporting and investing in Washington Middle School.  I would like to extend my appreciation and gratitude to the staff of Working Classroom, the members of the Huning Castle Neighborhood Association, Southwest Capital Bank, RIPE INC. Sanctuary at ABQ and NM Youth Tennis Association, and many of our dedicated parents and students for their time and efforts to begin the work on rejuvenating the Washington Mural, our beautiful tennis courts and the green house with it's fully functioning aquaponic system . Our community members and families have spent countless hours over the summer to ensure Washington MS is a place that is appealing, inviting and promotes the continued growth of downtown and our school.

I am eager and anxious for this school year to begin. Over the summer, the Instructional Council worked diligently to develop an instructional plan for this school year that will continue to aide in our efforts to rebuild and reshape the academic culture and climate of our school. As we enter the new year,  I am confident that Washington Middle School is on a path to becoming a school that will provide students with educational experiences that are: meaningful, relevant, challenging and culturally sensitive to the diverse student body we have the fortunate opportunity to educate and influence.

As a graduate of Albuquerque High School and an APS educator of 18 years, I can assure you that I will continue to work hard and advocate for the educational rights of our students.  I truly consider myself an instructional leader and I believe the community will recognize in me someone truly invested in strengthening classroom instruction while creating a safe, nurturing and welcoming environment.  More than anything, you will see that I am a student advocate and believe all decision-making at a school site be grounded in one simple question: “Is this what’s best for students?”

This is going to be an exciting and productive school year filled with academic success as we focus on: improving classroom instruction through purposeful scaffolding of rigorous and challenging curriculum by developing academic language through aligned  AVID & GLAD school-wide strategies. We will continue to foster Positive Behavior Support systems and increased Community Engagement. Washington is located in the heart of downtown and as such has access to numerous resources not available to other schools.  I continue looking forward to further building relationships and connections with our community to enhance the vibrant culture of our school in an effort to provide meaningful learning opportunities for our students.

Please feel free to contact me directly via email or by phone at (505) 252-3135.

This is going to be a great year at Washington Middle School!
